Thailand shelves Asia-Pacific trade agreement

Thailand has decided not to seek membership in a key Asia-Pacific trade agreement. The commerce ministry said on Monday the membership of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership would boost economic growth and help offset the negative impact of the coronavirus. However, Thai opposition parties opposed the membership, saying it would hurt the economy, particularly the agricultural and healthcare sectors. Member countries include Japan and Canada, but not the United States.
